Right to request time off for training
The Government is planning to introduce Regulations that will permit all employees who have formally completed six months' service to request unpaid time off from their normal duties to undertake training.
It is expected that the regulations are intended to operate similarly to the existing right to request flexible working. This would suggest one that the employee has opportunity a year to make a specific request for time off; a duty on employers to treat such requests seriously and the need to provide a good business reason in order to turn the request down.
Time-off will be unpaid unless the employer wished to contribute. The employer will not be required to contribute to any of the training costs, unless they wished to do so.
The date for the introduction of this regulation has not been set, but it may be introduced in April 2010. The consultation in relation to the regulations closed on 10 September 2009.
